Mar 20 2010 4:00P - Maria’s Taco Shop

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
The Texas hospitality & the finger-licking ribs!

Are you out promoting anything?
We are promoting our CD, "Bruja on the Corner" and our upcoming Broadway gypsy musical.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Slyvain Sylvain & Cheetah Crome's new band, the Zero's and of course Alejandro Escovedo!

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Picking & choosing what shows to see, being there are so many good bands!

Do you have any survival tips?
Sleep a week prior to the festival, because there is no sleep to be had at SXSW.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Both. Love to play as many shows as possible + see as many new artists as possible, + WE LOVE AUSTIN, so we like to arrive early and leave later to take in the good vibes of the city!

SXSW Show Times:
Mar 20 2010 8:00P - Crappy/Oglio Records SXSW Showcase - Cedar Door

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
I enjoy Chaos and SXSW has plenty to offer! Every year feels like a High School reunion. I consistently run into people that I NEVER thought I would see. And not just music folks. It is just a great time. Kinda like camp, but with beer.

Are you out promoting anything?
Our new album is called "Sorry For Partyin'"...New video and single "No Hablo Ingles" is out now!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I haven't made my schedule yet, but I can not WAIT to see Linus of Hollywood and Parry Gripp!

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
It is a small area with a LOT of people. Loading in and out can be tough. they do a great job of trying to make it as smooth as possible, but it can be an insane experience. I am glad we have crew guys now!

Do you have any survival tips?
Drink lots of water and bring sunscreen. Also, and I am serious, bring good shoes, because you will walk a LOT!

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I went last year and didn't even play. it was GREAT! so I am doing a good combination of the two this year!!

Any additional comments?
Check out the SXSW website prior to going. they have a way to make a google calendar on there that you can sync with your phone...It was a LIFE SAVOR last year!

Getting to TX, making sure everyone has a place to stay, transportation.

Do you have any survival tips?
This is our first time, we need some!

Haven't checked it all out yet.

Lack of small intimate community gigs where bands meet each other.

Do you have any survival tips?
Get off the main streets especially if you need an ATM. $5 or $6 for withdrawal fees are not cool, ever.

3/18 – 4pm – Trophy’s, Affordable Sound Stage
3/20 – 4pm – Headhunters
3/20 – 7:30pm – Irie Bean Coffee

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
The whole world converges on Austin. It's pretty interesting to see all the different bands playing their hearts out in hopes of furthering their career.

Are you out promoting anything?
We just released a FABULOUS new cd called BFD. It's was produced by Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go's.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Not really anyone in particular. There will be so much good stuff to choose from. I like to spend SXSW as time to see bands I have never heard of.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Parking and traffic

Do you have any survival tips?
I think a lot of bands come to SXSW in hopes that they will some how be seen be a record executive. That's  a misconception. Use SXSW as a time to have fun and get to know other bands or seeing other acts. If you come to SXSW thinking it's going to somehow make you famous.. you're in for a disappointment.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I would rather enjoy myself and see other bands. Like I said, it's highly unlikely some record executive is going to see you and make you famous. ha ha what a joke. There is so much good music out there. I want to see something great and be inspired. Not drained, running around trying to make people pay attention to my band.

Any additional comments?
I love SXSW.

plus more probably..

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Seeing old friends, seeing old friends bands, seeing old bands friends. Seeing old bands.

Are you out promoting anything?
We are promoting our new book “Hopewell vs. The Indie Rock Mafia: a memoir”. We are also promoting our latest record Good Good Desperation and an upcoming covers record featuring all the people who inspired us in the first place: members of Home, Rollerskate Skinny, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Ride, Grand Mal/St. Johnny singing/playing on covers of Syd Barrett, Lou Reed, Stooges and Brian Eno.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Serena Maneesh are great. So is the Silent League.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
NO SOUNDCHECK, drunkenness, heat stroke, dealing with people who think that fame exists, no sleep.

Do you have any survival tips?
Step away from the fray at least once. Go swimming. Eat local cuisine.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We are more “stick around and play as many shows as possible while enjoying the scene except when it’s time to go swimming.”

Website:
www.myspace.com/bearhandsband

Hometown:
Brooklyn, New York

SXSW Show Times:
Mar 19 2010 11:00P Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
What we most like about playing SXSW is the free love.

Are you out promoting anything?
We just released a 7" vinyl single called What a Drag. We made a video for it in the freezing rain which you can find on the internet. We're touring the US with We were Promised Jetpacks, and then again with Passion Pit starting after SXSW.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Bands to see... Tony Castles

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Staying sober, finding a place to sleep, finding a decent klezmer band.

Do you have any survival tips?
The buddy system

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We'll be sticking around, checking the scene for sure. It's cold in New York

Alina Simone - SXSW Interview and Video

Website:
www.alinasimone.com

Hometown:
Lexington, MA

SXSW Show Times:
March 17th at 11 pm at The Ale House
March 20th afternoon Large Hearted Boy showcase at Book People.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Seeing old friends from all over the country who I otherwise wouldn't see. Also, seeing old friends from around the corner in Brooklyn who I otherwise wouldn't get to see because we are always too busy running around trying to make rent.

Are you out promoting anything?
Mmm...Nope!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Honestly, my musical tastes manage to miss the entire SXSW range: either the artists have already been dead for 50 years or they are at the Madonna end of the spectrum.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Trying to suppress hating yourself for ruining Austin for the nice people who live there.

Do you have any survival tips?
Yes. An evening at SXSW is infinitely more enjoyable if you are hanging out with your best friends. I long ago decided to make the compromise in favor of spending the evening with friends over going wherever the best show was.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I've done it both way. I am not an ideal advocate for festivals in that: I barely drink, I hate crowds and am short. Plus, all the best shows and "it" bands have a line wrapping around the block that leaves you awash in frustration. I don't think I've answered your question at all, but you get my gist.

playing in front of some new people...catching up with some people that don't usually make it down to texas

Are you out promoting anything?
promoting our new record (Snow in June)

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
athlete...black rebel motorcycle club...butterfly explosion

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
biggest challenge for bands is getting gear in and out of the clubs....and parking

Do you have any survival tips?
drop gear off early....then relax

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
i think we would lean more to the "play as many as we can and bolt" but we have definitely hung around for the week in the past and its always a good time

Any additional comments?
i hope we win

The Butterfly Explosion - SXSW Interview and Video

Website:
www.myspace.com/butterflyexplosion

Hometown:
Dublin, Ireland

SXSW Show Times:
Mar 17 8:30P Habana Calle 6
Mar 18 11:00P Musebox party at Rusty Spurs
Mar 19 1:00A Music From Ireland party at B.D. Rileys

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Well there's no festival like it in Europe, a city centre hosting so many great bands together with gigs happening on every block from noon to late. It's as exciting to be there as a music fan as it is to be playing.

Are you out promoting anything?
Yeah, we're releasing our debut album 'Lost Trails' just before we head over to the States so the timing couldn't be better for us to promote the release over there. We also have shows lined up in NYC and Chicago en route to the festival.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
The xx, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Caspian, Junius, Little Black Dress and The Depreciation Guild from Brooklyn are an upcoming band worth checking out with lovely dreampop textures.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Well the good thing from the music fan's perspective is having the choice of so many gigs at any one time, the obvious challenge for most bands then is making sure your audience finds you amidst the madness but if your show is good you're always going to pull a crowd in and make new fans.

Do you have any survival tips?
Power naps! Whether it's at noon or in the evening I think some daily siestas will be in order to keep the body and mind in check. It'll be a manic enough start for us, we've a gig in Chicago the Tuesday night, then a 6am flight to Austin and our official showcase that Wednesday night, which is also Paddy's Day so there might even be a party going on earlier that afternoon featuring some of us bands from Ireland.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Merge those two together and you have the answer! We don't want to travel all the way from Ireland to Austin to play one 40
minute showcase so we do hope to play a couple of more parties. I guess it's best to keep a balance though, keep the focus on a select few shows and allow yourself some time to soak up the great atmosphere. We'll be there for several days so there'll be plenty of time for both.

Any additional comments?
Butterfly Explosion's debut album is available now from their website www.butterflyexplosion.com/music  and released on iTunes and other webstores on March 1st.

Maren Parusel - SXSW Interview and Video

Website:
www.myspace.com/marenparusel

Hometown:
Siegmaringen, Germany

SXSW Show Times:
March 20th 9 pm at the Wave

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
It's great to be a part of all these different shows and being able to experience so many bands and artists from all over the world, playing music together and creating this great creative energy in the city.

Are you out promoting anything?
Yes , I'm promoting myself and my 7 inch + EP , which came out at the end of last year on Single Screen Records.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I don't know yet... I checked out Katie Stelmanis homepage, which I found on one of your showcase sites and I got interested in checking out her show at SXSW.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
The challenge is to find a good label which will put out my music, so I can quit my day job and tour the world !!!

Also, there are so many bands and artists playing that it is hard to have a complete overlook on all the venues. I guess it's good to have some sort of plan before going into it. the challenge is to stick out of the mass, to get as many people to see you, especially the ones who enjoy music and who are involved in the music biz...

Do you have any survival tips?
Ya, come prepared and make a plan in advance of what other artists or showcases you wanna go to, or you might get overwhelmed by all your choices. you won't get much sleep and you will party all the time, so bring shades to cover your eyes in the morning and maybe some personal hangover cure. Be prepared that anything could happen! just go with the flow and have fun !

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I would say both. I would love to play as much as I can and also enjoy checking out other bands and artists.

Francis - SXSW Interview and Video

Website:
www.francisishere.com

Hometown:
Dalarna, Dalarnas län Sweden

SXSW Show Times:
Our official gig is on Friday 19th. Midnight at Friends Bar 208 E. 6th Street.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
We've never been to the festival before so we don't know what to expect. But we do like that it will be much warmer than it is up here right know.

Are you out promoting anything?
We've just finished our debut album and will release a digital single from it somewhere in March. We don't have a release set for the album tough. One or more videos will be recorded this spring. A lot will happen, but we don't know much for sure. It is much more interesting that way.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Hopefully we'll meet interesting people and see shows with bands we didn't know existed. Of bands that we do know about we will try to watch Efterklang, Holy Fuck, Deer Tick and Broken Social Scene.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
There is a hell lot of bands so I guess it is a challenge to get the audience to just your show. We really hope we don't play the same time as My Chemical Romance. That is our kind of audience. Hope we don't play the same time as B-Real from Cypress Hill too. That is the kind of stuff that we grew up to, and that is not a joke.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't eat strange things you don't know anything about. It might kill you, as well as grizzly bears. Don't call their attention to you, that's bad according to the TV. We've heard that water is pretty good too. Friends named after a day of the week might be helpful too.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
First one of course. Call us what you want but we are not boring and stiff like those famous people hanging out in the hotel room acting like jerks. Well, of course we don't afford hotel rooms so maybe we are like that to, I don't know.

Any additional comments?
Surfer Blood and Warpaint was some really cool band names. Don't know what they do or how they sound but we'd like to check them out at the festival as well.

- March 18, Canada House at Paradise
- March 20, 1:30pm WOXY/Homeslice Pizza Party

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
It's the great and rare opportunity to see an overwhelming number of bands that you would normally see in large venues but at SXSW you more often than not get to see them play in an intimate club setting - and to top it off you get to see them for free.

Are you out promoting anything?
We are still promoting our first LP called About A Girl. Since getting off a tour of the West Coast with Thunderheist at the end of the year, we've been recording our second LP that will be out this fall. We will be playing a lot of new songs from that at SXSW!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
We're really looking forward to see Spoon and Cheap Trick cause we've never seen either band live before. CHAMILIONARE AND PAUL WALL!! HAHA

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Trying to find parking anywhere remotely close to your gig.

Do you have any survival tips?
Scope out parking, and try to pace yourself with the free margaritas that inevitably show up everywhere.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
SXSW is about both these things- but especially a prolonged trip if we can get it to stay away from the cold of Montreal. Everything's warmer at SXSW.

The heat. The staggering amount of cool. Parking.

Do you have any survival tips?
Come prepared to be hot. Also, your iPhone is going to give you problems.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
The latter. It's tough to get band-gear in and out of the downtown area. Once the gear is out, I am too.

Do you have any survival tips?
Stay focused

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I guess somewhere in-between☺

You Say Party! We Say Die! - SXSW 2010 Interview and Video

18-Mar - Austin, TX - Paper Bag Records Party / Speakeasy @ SXSW
19-Mar - Austin, TX - Hype Machine Showcase @ SXSW
19-Mar - Austin, TX - Pure Volume Showcase @ SXSW

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
To play to many different people from all over the world all at once and get the chance to meet/check out other bands.

Are you out promoting anything?
Yes, we have our third release out right now, a full length album called, "XXXX." We are touring it now. We toured it across Canada, and in March/April we will be touring it in the America. Then, we are flying to Uk/Europe and after that China/Japan and SE Asia! We have made a few videos for songs off this album and have more on the way.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I haven't had a chance to look at the roster and schedule yet. Last time, Krista and I saw The Polysics.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
The most difficult thing is probably staying healthy when you're running around all week playing shows, taking meetings and giving interviews. It's also ridiculously hard to load-in to your venue, depending on where your venue is and how much equipment you have. I heard that last year the Ten out of Tenn crew hired the bicycle taxis to haul their gear back and forth before and after their showcase haha.

Do you have any survival tips?
There is a lot of distractions to living healthy on tour and at festivals, so it is good to at least make sure you drink lots of water. Hydration and Vitamins can keep you going way longer that booze and drugs.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
This time, we are playing quite a few parties and showcases, and we are on a schedule so we may not have the chance to stick around, though i hope we will get a window of opportunity.

I've spent so much time on the road lately, SXSW is actually the one time a year I get to run around w/ all of my musician friends from around the country. It's a lot of work, but it's so much fun spending time w/ friends and supporting each other throughout the week.

Are you out promoting anything?
Right now we're gearing up to promote my debut full length album 'The Ladder' releasing February 23rd 2010. We're actually making a video this weekend for the lead single 'Static Waves (feat. Katie Herzig) in NYC. I'm hoping to release it in March/April.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I'm hoping Lisa Hannigan is there again this year - I missed her set last march and have regretted it ever since...I heard it was unreal!

SLEEP and WATER. That's my regiment at least. It's the only way I can make it through that week without sounding like garbage by the end of it.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I am definitely  a stick around guy. Like I said, my favorite part is meeting up with friends from around the country that I normally don't get to spend much time with. It's so much fun!

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Love Austin and the people out there. One of our favorite places to visit. Had a few personal top performances while out there with Ulrich Schnauss so it'll be a dream to hopefully add another to the list! It'll also be amazing to play one of the funnest festivals in existence for our first time. A big stepping stone to climb up for us!

Are you out promoting anything?
We're promoting a new single and EP which we plan to finish up for summer. We also just released a video for "Manhattan Beach" which we're super proud of and are putting the finishing touches on a single we'll be taking with us down to the festival. We have another festival we'll be playing on our way down to SXSW in Denton called nx35. Should be a great show. Playing alongside The Black Angels, The Flaming Lips, Health, and Midlake among many others, and with company like that who could complain?

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Darker My Love, Autolux, Minipop, The Besnard Lakes, Death, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, Sleepy Sun and Yppah are all for sure on my do not miss list.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
I think the biggest challenge is traversing through the city for showtime and getting the gear into the venue without being trampled from the thousands of people every which way. Also, another big challenge would be not running someone over who's drunk and stumbling around in the street. Don't want to run over that "big break", ya know? ;)

Do you have any survival tips?
Bring lots of socks, book a decent room, don't try to get signed and bug the fuck out of industry people, and rock.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I love the whole event. We don't plan to dine-n-dash. Never know what's gonna happen while we're down there and I for one don't want to miss any of the insanity.

SXSW 2010 Preview - Interview with Suzanna Choffel

Website:
www.myspace.com/suzannachoffel

Hometown:
Austin, Texas

SXSW Show Times:
Sat, March 20th 12:00am Momo's

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Well I love getting to hear other bands from other places, but most of all I think I just love hearing all of the different languages spoken!  It's so much fun passing by people on the street or in a restaurant speaking Norweigan or Portugeuse or Japanese.  Playing SXSW is great cause your audience has so many different people in it that you wouldn't normally have. It's a nice change of pace and atmosphere.

Are you out promoting anything?
I'm finishing my new album and have a new single "Archer" that we are releasing this week as a digital download from my website.  I'm also starting a two-week tour Feb. 16th as support for Carbon Leaf.  So SXSW will be sort of a homecoming for me.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Honestly I haven't even looked at the schedule of bands yet, but what I like to do is check it out the week before, make some notes, and then also get pulled to certain shows by friends of other musicians who know of a great showcase.  In years past, some of my favorite shows were things I kind of stumbled into accidentally.  I definitely love discovering bands I've never heard of from other continents.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
The schedule coordinating can be a challenge - making sure you're able to get from point A to point B in enough time, and be able to lug your gear safely to and from places.  Coordinating with my band can be tough too - just making sure everyone knows where they're supposed to be at what time.  It gets a little crazy, but that's part of the fun too.

Do you have any survival tips?
Stay hydrated!!!  I cannot stress that enough.  It's easy to drink a lot of alcohol at many of the events, throughout the day into the evening.  Take breaks from the alcohol and make sure you always have water handy.  Vitamins are good too.  And above all, sleep, but that usually doesn't happen a lot for me during SX (hence the vitamins).  Also, don't kill yourself trying to get to too many showcases in one night.  Last year I made my mind up to kind of park myself at a venue all night and it was so much more enjoyable than running around the city plus I ended up discovering some cool new music.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Well I have the luxury of living in Austin, so I kind of get to do both.  I always end up playing a lot and checking out a lot of music. Basically I love to play hard and work hard, which can sometimes be overwhelming during SX, but to me, you have to take in as much as you can, because it only lasts 5 days and it flies by.

SXSW 2010 Preview - Interview with Woodhands

www.woodhands.com

Hometown:
Toronto, Canada

SXSW Show Times:
Paper Bag Records showcase on March 18th at Speakeasy
Rolling Stone party on March 20th at 402 E 6th (Peckerheads)

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
The bands, the sun, the food.

Are you out promoting anything?
Yes, we are hawking everything including our souls. We have a new album out - Remorsecapade - with a bunch of accompanying videos, and we are touring the great United States of America through March and April. Come party with us.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I usually get a highlighter and hit every hip hop show that I can. Best SXSW concert yet: El-P, Devin the Dude, Dizzee Rascal, and Del outdoors in 2008.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
We've got a pretty elaborate setup so getting all systems to go can be tricky with the insane amount of changeovers that are happening at each venue.

Do you have any survival tips?
Sunblock! And a hat. And switch from free beer to water every once in a while...

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We have a crack team of managers, agents, label reps, and groupies that triangulate our schedules and ensure that our exposure is somewhere between orange and red alert. But checking out shows is a definite must too.

Any additional comments?
We will be the ones having the most fun. And we like hugs...
