What do like most about playing at SXSW?
The Mexican Food

Are you out promoting anything?
Promoting the latest full-length. Last year's "Oohs & Aahs."

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Best Coast, Phantogram, Liars, Pearly Gate Music, Surf City.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Trying to stand out among 4000 other jackasses with beards and white passenger vans.

Do you have any survival tips?
Hydrate. Sit in a hotel lobby for fifteen minutes to regain your strength.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Definitely the former.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
It’s the universal playground for new and old artist to perform, and gives break through acts like us, a chance for everyone to get a taster – bring your ear plugs - damn it we’re LOUD!!!

Are you out promoting anything?
We have a single called Have You Ever Felt So Messed Up? which was release in the UK, and we are now promoting in the US, with the 15th March being our Release date Stateside.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
We are really interested to see what a the other world bands are getting their kicks from… but My Chemical Romance will be cool, and watch out for Marina & the Diamonds – new from the UK.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Where do we start… for a band with no money – that’s the best place to start! If you cannot rustle up around £10k sterling, don’t apply from the UK, we were lucky to get some match funding from the UKTI a government body to help UK business’s reach out to export territories… hey they must have listened to the music first before and then said “QUALITY!!!”

Do you have any survival tips?
If you’re from outside the US – make sure you have the correct power adaptors for your backline – or it might just go POP before your gig!!!

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
PARTY PARTY PARTY!

Any additional comments?
Yeah, I have an additional comment… contact us if you want us to perform at your Party – we’ll make it one to remember!!!!

SXSW Show Times:
Mar 20 8:00P - Treasure Island - Music Gorilla Showcase
Mar 20 11:00P - Mi Casa Cantina

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
It's a tie between the margarita machine at the Canadian house and seeing cool bands we would not normally get to see.

Are you out promoting anything?
We've got a new album called Territory and have recently ventured into the animated world with our new music video for a tune called Noisemaker.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I'm hoping we can catch The dBs.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Due to the intense heat it becomes tempting to wear shorts while playing.  We learned early on however that shorts on stage are unacceptable. Having said that, if it's hot enough...

Do you have any survival tips?
Do not wear sunscreen.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Definitely the former. When's that Magnetic Fields documentary showing? Wouldn't mind seeing that.

Any additional comments?
Come to our showcase. The drive from Prince Edward Island may near kill us but we still give it our all.

Mar 20 8:00P - The WAVE - SXSW OFFICIAL SHOWCASE

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
AUSTIN!  In our trips to SXSW we have become acquainted with the city and fell in love.  It's our home away from home.  Also - the energy around the festival is like nothing else.  I always tell people that if they come to SXSW, they had better plan to return every year.  It's a one of a kind experience.

Are you out promoting anything?
TRANSFER will be in support of their brand new full length album, FUTURE SELVES and will be releasing the first video installment for the song, 'GET SOME REST' - shot in Austin with a native cast and crew, produced and directed by Laura Wallgren.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Looking forward to checking out Bear Hands, The Black and White Years, Band of Horses, Band of Skulls...pretty much all bands that start with the letter B

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Time management, parking and sobriety

Do you have any survival tips?
Drink water, rest when you can

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We always head to SXSW with ambition to cruise around and enjoy the scene...but wind up adopting the mentality of soldiers at war with the elements.  It seems like right when you think you are free to just hang out, another show presents itself and it's off to the races.  All part of the excitement but it normally takes us about 3-4 days to recover/de-tox from the whole thing.

Any additional comments?
TRANSFER is thrilled to take part in the SXSW festival this year.  Come check it out!!

I don’t know what the hell is going on. I’m sure I’ll find out when I get there.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Getting in to the country.

Do you have any survival tips?
Take insulin, check blood sugar level regularly, stay away from large doormen.

Mar 20 7:00P - SXSW @ Mi Casa Cantina

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
uh...EVERYTHING!  Networking, seeing bands you've always wanted to see, being surprised by bands you've never heard of, open bars, BBQ, goodies everywhere...the whole experience is incredible!

Are you out promoting anything?
We are doing a split called "Hearts Intersect" with The 1959 Hat Company from Toledo.  It's coming out March 9th on Slumber Party Records.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Terry Poison!  We saw them at CMJ and they totally blew us away.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Well, it's tough to stand out when you're surrounded by 2000 of the best bands on planet Earth.  It's also a challenge to stay focused on playing the best set of your life with so much other fun stuff going on all around you.  Just because there is a Miller Lite girl handing out free beers doesn't mean you need to drink 20 of them before you play.  Try to restrict your booze intake to no more than ten drinks before taking the stage so as not to appear to be a sloppy drunken boob.

Do you have any survival tips?
Drink enough water, get enough sleep, and bring some comfy walking shoes.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We're definitely going to stick around and check out some music.  We'll be spending a couple of days recording in Austin prior to SXSW which will be nice.  Austin is such a great city that you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't take some time to explore the town and take it all in.

Any additional comments?
We are honored to be a part of SXSW.  We cannot wait to get there!!!

Mar 20 8:00P - SXSW Under the Radar Party @ Emo’s Annex East

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Last time I played SXSW I was only 20 so I had to sneak into our show through a bathroom window. Your ID laws are insane. This time I can do whatever I want cause I'm legally of age and no bouncer in the world can stop me.

Are you out promoting anything?
Promoting things are what interviews are for, the shows are just all about us figuring out what we're doing and where we'll go next.

Do you have any survival tips?
In Texas a small portion of onion rings is more than enough.

Haven't seen Plants & Animals yet, definitely want to check out Wolf Gang

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
I hear people are rarely physically fit enough to handle the experience.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't skimp on sunscreen, gatorade and coconut water hydrate better than water, sleep on the leeward side of the mountain, and most importantly: live by the gun.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Absolutely looking forward to checking things out and meeting people and getting some serious BBQ.

We have two collaborations with UNKLE to be released this year, one of which to be included on their forthcoming record due in May 2010.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Check out Mondo Drag, Chylde, and Smoke & Feathers on March 17th at Cheers. For the most part, we haven't checked out much of the lineups. More exciting to show up and cruise about.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Keeping yourself in check.

Do you have any survival tips?
Drink lots of water in addition to libations.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Somewhere in between?

March 19th @ Radisson 7:00 - 7:45 pm (FREE show)
March 20th @ Embassy Suites 7:00 - 7:45 pm (FREE show)

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
We really don't know yet. It's our first time playing it with The Black Atlantic. But, we feel priviliged to take part with all of the great bands taking part in it. Some of our friends' bands are playing. And some of our family will be there to. So, we'll try to enjoy as much of it together as we can.

Are you out promoting anything?
All of the above! We're starting a 4 month stretch of international touring at SXSW. We'll be promoting our debut album "Reverence for Fallen Trees" which we released end of August, 2009 as a free download.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Our friends in The Antlers, who also played on our record. Dustin O'Halloran, Bowerbirds, Here We Go Magic, Surfer Blood. And, I'm psyched to go see Motörhead!

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
The same as for any other unknown foreign band: drawing a crowd and finding people interested in working with us in the future. But, we're not worried about it.

Do you have any survival tips?
No, not really. I think the main thing is just to enjoy it as much as you can.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Both!

Any additional comments?

Julie The Band - SXSW Interview and Video

Website:
www.myspace.com/julietheband
www.julietheband.com

Hometown:
Venice, California

SXSW Show Times:
Key Bar, March 17th 9pm

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
I like the fact that it is a place where true music fans in the industry go to discover new music and see bands they love. The industry folk are there to learn and to soak in the music, and that creates a really vibrant exciting energy. Austin is a great town as well. There are amazing bands!!!!

Are you out promoting anything?
We will be promoting our upcoming EP, "Wild As The Sky". The songs are leaning toward an Alt-Country feel. We will also be touring in the end of April and early May to Nebraska, Texas, Kansas, and a few other spots. We plan on doing a video per song on this EP.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Been really into Dawes and Dr. Dog. Hope to see them there!

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Its over saturated at SX. The competition is fierce! SO MANY BANDS...its like going to a museum and after a few hours you get burnt and don't appreciate anymore. The other thing is its nearly impossible to get booked without representation from a PR or Media company, so true indie bands get overlooked. The other thing is no one pays an indie band during that time so you pretty much have to come out of pocket to be there.

Do you have any survival tips?
Keep Breathing, drink lots of water. find something and someone you love.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We are very hungry to play and work. We would love to play as much as possible and see as much music as possible. its only worth going if you have the attitude of trying to get the most out of it as possible. on all fronts!!!!

Any additional comments?
We are grateful to be playing and making music. SXSW is a great platform for indie bands to be seen...We just hope we get the opportunities to be seen and heard!!

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Being able to play for people who might not have the chance to see us. People from all countries. Last year we had some fans from the Netherlands come see us.

Are you out promoting anything?
Our album Truth On Tape was released Feb 9 and we have been touring with Bob Schneider which will probably continue in April/May. We also have two new music videos out for Beg You to Stay and Truth on Tape is soon to come!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
We kinda like discovering random bands when we are there. We try to catch the international showcases.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Carrying Jencey's Fender Rhodes through the streets to the venue.

Do you have any survival tips?
Always have an insider at the party.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We like to play and bolt unless there are specific shows we want to check out.

Any additional comments?
Our favorite memory of SXSW was our random David Frick encounter in which Ryan almost forced him to take a CD. He ended up taking it from us and lifted up his shirt. He had about five CDs already stuck in the waistband of his pants!

FRIDAY March 19

2-6pm (time tba) : AMBER RUBARTH @ One 2 One Day Party
One 2 One Bar : 5th St. & Brazos

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
I love that everyone playing puts their A game on because there is so much music, you really have to be truly great or creative to stand out. And somehow over the 3 days you start recognizing people, and it feels like a little city or a summer camp or something, all these random people from every corner of the world all in it together.

Are you out promoting anything?
YEAH! My brand new album GOOD MYSTERY is officially coming out March 2nd and I'm really happy to be touring with it....

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Yeah! I've been really loving a lot of bands from Sweden, Norway and Japan lately. A good friend of mine from Norway, Tommy Haltbakk (his band is called The Royalties) is playing bass with a Norwegian artist Julian Berntzen down there I'm looking forward to hearing.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Hmmm.... well I like being a loner at least once a day and sometimes that is hard to come by there. But other than that, it's all good.

Do you have any survival tips?
The best thing which I discovered last year while hanging out with Jason Reeves is to go to the river.... Austin people call it a lake there but I'm pretty sure it's a river that's been dammed off. And I recommend talking to the ducks and skipping along the paths and visiting the turtles. It's the greatest and an instant recharge from the overload of sound and people. :) And while you're at it, hang out with Jason Reeves, he has that same affect.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I'm a check-out-the-music all the way for the 3 days but after that I'm out. I like the intense blast of it all.

Any additional comments?
I just ate the most incredible peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwich on cinnamon raisin toast with cinnamon sprinkled on top. So delicious. I recommend that too.

Mar 18 4:00P - All Your Friends Are Here, Dominican Joe’s
Mar 19 2:00P - Baby Blue
Mar 19 8:00P - Annie St Arts Collective

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
It seems so chaotic and impossible to manage, but somehow friends show up at all the shows, and we find a way to go to all of theirs. You can see people perform in unlikely places, wearing no shoes (we would never!) and sunglasses. We like keeping it simple and chasing our friends around.

Are you out promoting anything?
We are promoting our new EP, Bright Bright Bright, on Supply and Demand Music, and beginning our Bright Bright Bright tour in Austin.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Hurray for the Riff Raff, Peter Wolf Crier, Dawes, Big Freedia (booty everywhere!!!)

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Fast set-up, limited sound-check, overworked sound techs.

Do you have any survival tips?
Drink more water than beer, go swimming, leave for shows early, don't take anything too seriously.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
"play a few shows, have some tacos, get some vitamin D (Minnesota people), go swimming, and then go on tour."

Any additional comments?
This is only our second year attending SXSW, so we haven't struck gold meeting the right person to do this or that for us, and we don't approach it with that in mind. We've toured hard for 3 years and really appreciate how many people are coming to our shows and supporting our music, and are often surprised when our work pays off with a room full of people who are excited to listen to us. It gives us the desire to discover more of the songs inside us, to keep driving around the country, and to keep being broke.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Seeing and being around all these other bands and musicians. The heat is awesome too I am not a cold person and I really enjoy getting some warmth in the middle/end of winter. I just love having everything in thi compact little area and being able to just wander and meander with so many different people all day and night. I like the river too, that's my favorite spot.

Are you out promoting anything?
I have a new record coming out on March 2nd, it's a real labour of love and something I hope people give a listen to. I will be putting up 10 whole home-made video/stories for each video, I am currently half done with those. Some US touring and then going to Europe as well in May. And loads more I hope!

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Oh god, honestly, I usually don't know much of the lineup until I get there, maybe this year I will remember to research. This is my first year I've been officially selected, so I have a badge(I took that over the cash), so who knows? I will be seeing lots of shows. Drink Up Buttercup for sure though, I tend to stalk them at South By...

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Moving your gear. Luckily I don't have one of those hectic play 5 shows a day schedules this year but those can be killer. I don't know how you do it with a band.

Do you have any survival tips?
Buy things before you get there, there tends to be a "locust effect" on some items that everyone wants. Camel Lights, Jameson Whiskey, etc. Really... just try and have a good time, it's a really awesome place to be.

We are promoting out new album Spells, which is out on Autumn Tone Records.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I haven't seen the entire lineup of bands, but our producer David Newton is playing in Everybody Was in the French Resistance....Now! with Eddy Argos of Art Brut. So we will definitely be checking them out.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
There are a lot of shows going on so the competition for eyeballs can be intense. It is also tough for bands who have to move their gear all around Austin all day and night.

Do you have any survival tips?
Think of SXSW as a fun experience/vacation and not a do or die moment in your career.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We try to spread the shows out over four or five days so we get to do both!!!

Any additional comments?
Enjoy the great food in Austin!

Mar 19 3:00P - Design Within Reach - Everloving / Origami Vinyl / LA Record Day Party
Mar 20 12:00P - Red Eyed Fly - WXPN Day Party

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Free beer! No, seriously... Almost all the world is in one (warm and sunshiny) place for one week, so you inevitably run into 50 people you haven't seen in a year (or more), 30 people you've never met in person but have emailed or chatted with on the phone, and have made at least 10 new friends by the week's end. The world is so small and inter-connected anyway. And SXSW really intensifies that fact. All the great music and delicious Mexican food is just a bonus.

Are you out promoting anything?
Our debut album is coming out on Saddle Creek on April 27th (the day before my birthday). So I'm very excited to be sharing the songs for what will be the first time for most people.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I'm always excited to see my friends' bands. I never quite know who's playing or when or where, so I mark up my guide as soon as I get it. Texts and phone calls abound, and I see if I can synchronize my crazy schedule to theirs. When you're there working, it's hard to find enough time to see every band you'd want to see. That said, I'd absolutely love it if I could catch Wale, Vandaveer, These United States and Raphael Saadiq (DC love), as well as Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Thurston Moore, Solange (she killed that "Stillness is the Move" cover), Dr. Dog, Aloha and BRAHMS. Cale Parks (of Aloha and BRAHMS) toured with Georgie James' went we went out with Camera Obscura a few years back. He's a brilliant person and a musical genius. I'm always excited to hear what he's up to.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Parking a van. And trying not to kill anyone in the process.

Do you have any survival tips?
Flexibility, at least one fresh, sit-down meal a day, and time for meaningful conversations. These three things are magic. In fact, I'd recommend them for everyday life -- not just SXSW.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I've done both things, and I think there's a happy medium. Given that we've got a new record coming out in April, we're going to play as many shows as possible. But we're also going to have a ton of fun doing it.

Any additional comments?
I cannot wait for SXSW, the springtime Austin sun, and all the good fun that's sure to ensue. We've all had enough of this snow and ice and I, for one, am counting the days til I can meet up with you and everyone else for some meaningful conversation -- over a free drink. I mean, if someone's handing them out, you wouldn't just turn down that Austin hospitality now, would you?

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Catching up with friends. Despite the chaos, it's nice to have the chance to see so many people all at once.

Are you out promoting anything?
Right after SXSW we'll be kicking off a nationwide tour with our friends and Austin natives Shearwater. They have a new record on the way and it's excellent. At some point in the spring we'll also be releasing a new EP, more info on that forthcoming.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I try to go into the week with few expectations, because it's hard to know what's really possible in your schedule until you're in the middle of it. If something incredible happens itself into my path, it's all the better if it's unexpected.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
I mean...it's obviously a total clusterfuck, and it's really hard to focus on the task at hand when you're trying to adhere to a tight schedule.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't forget to eat.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
It depends. I'm certainly open to having great, positive experiences at a place like SXSW, but sometimes my system can only take so much excess. If I'm feeling overwhelmed by the spectacle, I'm not going to force myself. 5 days is a long time. Do what you feel, y'know?

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
If there would be a scale from 1-10 and "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" would be 1 and "play as many shows as possible then get out" would be 10. According to my schedule my experience of the festival will probably be somewhere around a 6.

Do you have any survival tips?
The line at Stubbs will be too long but Moonshine Cafe makes some mean sandwiches.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
1) Getting there. 2) Making time to check out a lot of shows outside of the ones you're playing at.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't eat too much BBQ.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
This year, we're definitely more about playing a few shows and then enjoying the rest of the festival.

SXSW Show Times:
3/19 Coast to Coast @ Clive Bar 1pm RSVP
3/20 Moose Lodge 1pm
3/20 Home Slice/WOXY 5pm (no RSVP needed)

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Open ears.  Sure, people are there to see certain acts, but there are also people who want to discover something new.  And there are tons of people so just statisically speaking, you're bound to find some new fans there.  I mean, what band plays multiple times in multiple consecutive days at one festival? At SXSW, almost every band! AND it's not even over-saturating the market.  Amazing.

Are you out promoting anything?
We're promoting our recent full-length release we self-released late last year.  There's also an amazing video Christopher Ewing directed coming out next month for our song "Our Younger Noise" (you can see a teaser for it on http://lettingup.com/videos.php).  And most importantly, we're there to get free pizza from Home Slice.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Soo many...Surfer Blood, Quasi, Broken Bells, Washed Out, Best Coast, Lou Barlow, CFCF, Toro Y Moi...

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Scheduling!  There are so many parties/showcases and so many sponsors and event planners that trying to lock down a date, let alone a time, is hectic. It's like some sort of super organizational marathon.  And then you have the scheduling your fans have to keep track of if they want to see you.  Calendars have to be the hottest item during SXSW.

Do you have any survival tips?
RSVP like crazy.  If you see a party you MIGHT like, RSVP right now.  Also, lots of places will have free food esp. if it's sponsored.  Home Slice will be having free pizza and you don't even have to RSVP.  Win + Win.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
How could you not want to enjoy SXSW? We probably would have gone this year even if we weren't playing. There are so many amazing acts to check out...we're all very excited. Follow our twitter (@lettingup) if you want to party with us Friday night! We'll have off that night so it'll be our chance to be kids in a candy store. Kent went to school in Austin, so we'll have our own human GPS leading us around.

Mar 20 2:00P - SXSW Urban Outfitters Party
Mar 20 4:00P - SXSW Brooklyn Vegan Day Party

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
I think my favorite experience of SXSW was playing the Central Presbyterian Church last year. Acoustically, the venue was near impeccable, which with us being a vocally-focused band, is a huge plus. I remember it being one of those moments where I felt perfectly placed... To this day, it still stands as one of my favorite shows we've ever played.

Are you out promoting anything?
We're currently on a two month tour of Europe and the UK... I think we're about six weeks in. It's been amazing really, most of these stops have been completely new territory for us and the reception across the board has been great. Our album just released in the US, so we'll be going home soon to trek across the our country and support the release.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I've been listening to this band called Bear In Heaven a lot lately and I believe they're playing the festival this year. I'm really hoping that our schedule allows us to catch one of their shows. Also really looking forward to watching Broken Social Scene play the NPR show... I've loved that band for awhile now and never have gotten the chance to see them live.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
It's hectic. There's seemingly hundreds of shows going on at any given moment, and sometimes within the same venue at the same time you're playing... so the sound can be hit or miss.

Do you have any survival tips?
The festival is a great opportunity for unknown bands. We were told on numerous occasions to just go and play as much as humanly possible... so we did. If that's the way you go about it, I can't stress how important it is to rest when possible and pace yourself.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Whenever given the chance I definitely really enjoy checking out new bands and getting a feel for the scene, but sometimes, like our experience last year, there's so much going on that it's hard to stick around in one place. That's also the only (somewhat) bummer about touring, you never really get to know a city or place because you're in and out of it so quickly.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
I'm not sure, I've never played there before. I've heard there's a lot of great music and good margaritas.

Are you out promoting anything?
My album Curiouser is coming out in the US on March 16. I'll be touring around the States all through April, mainly as the opener for Ben Folds.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
There are so many bands playing - it's a little overwhelming. I love Frightened Rabbit. I saw them play in Australia last year, in a huge outdoor amphitheatre in the middle of a lightning storm. It was one of the most unforgettable gigs I've ever seen. Also, Hot Chip! There are a lot of good Australian bands playing too.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
From past experience playing industry-type events, I suppose the challenge will be firstly getting people to come to the show, and then getting them to shut the fuck up.

Do you have any survival tips?
Survival tips? What kind of a festival is this? Should I be worried about my survival?

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Well, I suspect anyone who opts for the latter is going to sound like a bit of an uppity prick. In all seriousness, I've been informed by reliable sources that SXSW is the one music conference that is actually fun, so I'm looking forward to it.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Well I've never been, so I have yet to find out. I do love playing City based festivals, you get all the exotica of a festival without the salmonella....

Are you out promoting anything?
Sure, I do have an album just out called ((un))...

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
There's quite a few, not sure I'll have the time but if possible: jj, Solange Knowles, YACHT, Young Fathers....

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
I'm guessing squeezing in enough sleep.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't take a LOT of drugs.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I don't see those as mutually exculsive aims - I'm going to, perhaps foolishly, attempt both!

Any additional comments?
Will all food be fried?

18th March - Elysium (Showcase) 8.30pm

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
People from all over the world come to this one place to play and listen to music. You get to meet loads of like minded people and have fun.

Are you out promoting anything?
We are promoting our album Submarine which was released in America in February , the 2nd single taken from it is We Never Close our Eyes (out in March). We are making the video for that in LA then touring the West coast after SXSW.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Don't know who's playing. Will check list now and see who I want to see. If it's right I heard that Smokey Robinson is giving a talk if so I'd love to that.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Making sure you have the right equipment and the lack of soundchecks. Hopefully we are borrowing a glockenspeil from our mates Oh No Oh My.

Do you have any survival tips?
Earplugs

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Last time we played a show or two shows a day. So we didn't check out many bands - so this time. We are doing 2 or 3 shows. We have more time to hang out with our friends who live in Austin.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
There's just a great energy in the air. Everyone comes out specifically to listen to music, which is great; there's very few people just hanging out in the bar to hang. It's awesome to feel like the whole audience is really into it.

Are you out promoting anything?
Our debut EP, Medium Head Boy, is being released on February 27th on Indierect Records. We can't wait to release it; we already have a full-length album mostly recorded to follow it, too, so you're all about to get a large dose of what we've got. It's very raw and fun.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
There are some fantastic Austin bands like the Happen-In's and the Humdingers playing around town that we love.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Parking. Parking is definitely the number one worst thing. And the heat, when it's been hot. Dragging heavy gear in the heat for eight blocks to play a show is awful.

Do you have any survival tips?
Beer is not an okay alternative to water if you're dehydrated. Trust us. We tried.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Depends on the music and the scene. If it's good and we dig it, why not stick around? But we'll probably be running around like crazy from set to set.

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
SXSW is always a great time. We get to see our friends bands from all across the country, it's a big reunion for everybody; which usually turns our house into a giant hostel

Are you out promoting anything?
Our new full-length 20,000 Ghosts came out back in Sept of 2009. We're still really excited about. We also have a tour coming up in April, so make sure and check out those dates as they get announced.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
I think it's safe to say that we're all really excited to see Band Of Horses again. Fanfarlo, Frightened Rabbit, to name a few. Also, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of our friends are playing this year, Dignan, All Get Out, and  Danny Malone are a couple of them. SXSW is also great for just stumbling upon some great bands you never would have heard of otherwise.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
A couple of years ago, we were playing at BD Rileys, it was about 170 degrees and we had to park our van and trailer about a mile away. Having to carry your gear that far in that sort of heat can be pretty hazardous to your health. Later that same day 4 or 5 of us got sick from some poisonous fajitas. And then we totaled our van. You really have to be careful, haha.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't eat the poisonous fajitas.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I'd say most of us are "stick sround, enjoy the fest" sort of people. Even if you don't have a good plan, there is plenty to do and enjoy right at your fingertips.

Any additional comments?
We are still working on some other show possibilities, so keep us on your radar. It should be a lot of fun. Let's All Hang Out

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Well, as a Canadian, it cuts my winter short.

Are you out promoting anything?
New record "Rat A Tat Tat," new ep "To Wit To Woo" and my backing band Zeus' debut "Say Us." We're on tour with pal Afie from "Bahamas" doing a revue called "The Bonfire Ball." Rather than playing three separate sets we're expanding and contracting as one band all night long.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
Oh, I'll see when I get there. I mostly like to catch up with friends I haven't seen in a while.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
The amount of drinks you don't have to pay for.

Do you have any survival tips?
Unless you like standing in line all night just enjoy what you stumble across.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
I'm fond of Austin, so I prefer a little hang time if the schedule permits.

March 19 – Showcasing Scotland @ Latitude 30 Time: 3.00pm
March 20 – Official Showcase @ Aces Lounge. Time: 9.00pm

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
The atmosphere in and around Austin throughout SXSW is something special, to say the least! It's a great mix of new and up and coming talent from around the globe twinned with the already established acts. Then there's the added bonus of sunshine - coming from Scotland, it's not something we're all too familiar with!

Are you out promoting anything?
The works, basically! We released the album, A Measure Of Wealth, in the fall of last year (in the UK) and have been touring the UK & Germany since then, so just more of the same when we get over the pond! The American DJ's have been really receptive of the record so far (the single ‘Don’t Stop, Believe’) and we're looking forward to showcasing the material live...

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
We've been locked up in our rehearsal space for a while now so haven't had a chance to check out the line-up but we're hoping to get in amongst the action after our shows. In 2008 we managed to catch The Clash's Mick Jones in his band, Carbon/Silicon, along with a couple of newer bands at the showcases but there's so much going on it's impossible to see it all.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
At SXSW you have the whole world in one city! All these great bands with the same goal. It can be a bit of a challenge to get yourself recognised but who said this was an easy ride?!

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't smoke crack! It'll save you your money and your mind!

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
Both, work hard - play hard and all that! We love playing live and doing all these shows is gonna be just as enjoyable as checkin' out what we're up against.

(more to come!)

What do like most about playing at SXSW?
Getting to see bands we like and hanging out with our friends who play in bands.

Are you out promoting anything?
We have a record, Spirit Youth, coming out in late April and we'll be playing songs from that album.

Are there any bands or musicians that you are looking forward to checking out?
We're definitely going to try to catch sets by our friends in Oh No Ono, Summer Cats, Caucus, Pants Yell, North Highlands, Zaza, Serena Maneesh, Morning Benders, and PC Worship.

What are the challenges in playing at SXSW?
Getting from one show to the next in the heat.

Do you have any survival tips?
Don't drink kiwi-flavored Mad Dog 20/20 no matter how much of a good deal it may seem. I made that mistake last year. It gives you a terrible headache.

Are you more "stick around, check out music and enjoy the scene" or "play as many shows as possible then get out"?
We'll be checking out as many shows as possible but we can't stay for the entire thing since we're starting a US tour with Serena Maneesh immediately after SXSW.
